Show Notes:
- Rich Spotlight: Dwight “Doc” Gooden
- Baseball was the only thing he wanted to do growing up and never knew the type of impact that he would have on people for playing a game he loved
- Was very shy growing up and didn’t really play organized baseball
- Didn’t play baseball in high school until his Junior year
- Signed National Letter of Intent to play college baseball at the University of Miami but decided to pursue professional career after being drafted in the 1st round and 5th overall by the NY Mets
- Still remembers his first start in the Majors against the Houston Astros in 1984 and he was so anxious he walked approximately 3 miles to the Astrodome
- Was very superstitious and one of his biggest superstitions was that he would wash his car before the game on the days he started because he had washed his car while in the Minors and he had a great game
- Chose the number 16 because it was the closest to his favorite number 10
- Very difficult to write his book Doc: A Memoir, but he felt he needed to tell his story in his own words and hopefully it would impact one person to avoid the dangers of addiction or show that you can recover from addiction
- Best pitcher that he has seen is Pedro Martinez and Barry Bonds is the best hitter that he ever faced
- Was most energized by the home crowd especially at Shea Stadium with the NY Mets
- Just recently started helping a Japanese minor league team with coaching for the pitchers
- Words of Wisdom from Dwight Gooden: “What good is having a life if you can’t impact someone else’s life.”
